The moon shined palely in the sky over Base Seventeen as a thick veil of fog covered the small island and a portion of the sea surrounding it. Several Marines were set out on watch that evening, but only one had been assigned to patrol the perimeter of the island. That lone marine was Lieutenant Hoshikita Cross, and he trudged begrudgingly around the small outcropping of land that lined the outskirts of the large iron base. He cursed his luck for being assigned this patrol on such an unpleasant night to be outside, and he desperately wished that he was one of the lucky Marines sleeping soundly in the barracks at the moment. Fate was not on his side today it seemed though, and he unhappily continued his patrol as his clothes clung wetly to his body. There was hardly any point in patrolling tonight anyway, as he didn't think he could see more than a few meters into the fog, and certainly not far enough to spot any sneaky intruders or passing ships.
Still, he continued carrying out his duty and put one foot in front of the other without rest. His eyes scanned what little they could see, and he proceeded to walk from the entrance of the base toward the rear. Each step was tentative, as Hoshikita knew that the island perimeter of the base was particularly narrow at points and he needed to be careful not to slip. Climbing back up wouldn't be overly difficult, but he certainly didn't want to end up in the water on a chilly night like this one. So, with each of his steps having been taken with caution he was somewhat relieved when he reached the furthest point on the island from the entrance. It was the point where the island stretched out farthest into the sea, and Hoshikita thought he might take a moment to "patrol this area more thoroughly". He was looking for a nice place to sit down and take a rest, for the first time that night not watching where he was going, when a simple misstep caused him to tumble down into a gaping hole about four feet in diameter. The young Marine tumbled through darkness, dirt, and spiderwebs as he fell down into the depths of the earth yelling out in a panic as he did so.
The hole was mostly vertical for about eight feet, just short enough for Hoshikita not to injure himself severely, but long enough that he certainly felt bruised and beaten when he hit the bottom. He hastily got to his feet, about to initiate a Geppou when he noticed that after the hole cut off, it tunneled sideways into a large room. Hoshikita's first thought was that someone must be tunneling under the base at the very moment, and that he had to ascertain the situation immediately. He headed through the tunnel for several meters until he reached the large room, but after scanning it for a moment he found no one in there. There was however a small stockpile of weaponry not related to the Marines, which Hoshikita couldn't discern the reason for. He figured he'd have to tell the Commander or the Captain about this, and he turned around to leave the small cavern. As he did so however, he felt something holding him back at his ankle, and when he looked down to see what it was he found a skeletal hand wrapped around the long limb. Hoshikita screamed girlishly as he witnessed a skeletal face pop up from the ground beneath him, and out of instinct, he turned back and used his free foot to stomp the ever non-living shit out of it's skull. The bone was durable and resistant, and the skeleton continued to crawl up out of the ground. Hoshikita didn't stop though, and he slammed his sandal into the skull several more times until it smashed into bits and pieces and the rest of the skeleton went limp.
