Task Name: Impromptu Treasure Hunt
Tier: T3
NPC or PC: PC
Location: Illusia
Crew, Team, or Personal: Personal
Description: While shopping in Illusia, you'll come upon a treasure map, and decide to embark on a quest to retrieve it. The guy is a shady merchant who nobody wanted to believe, but by instinct or Haki you decided to do so. It pays off, but you'll find you're not the only one to be after that treasure. A platoon of Marines is also after it! Stop them and take the treasure.
Enemy Details: 20 T0 Marines, 6 T1, 3 T2 Captains, 1 T3 Rear Admiral
Boss: No

Another day in Illusia. The heat from her earlier adventures had finally died down, enough for Linnea to risk another venture. This was easily one of the few - if not the only - island she could feel somewhat at home, the Marines' presence on this island was much too strong. Despite her usual sympathy for the Revolutionary army, Linnea wasn't happy to find these men were more worried about killing Marines than Protecting the Innocent people, like most Rev's worthy of her respect. Seeing that made her incredibly glad to have founded her own crew instead of joining up under someone else's banner... With a crew of no more than 15 people, she knew each and every one of her crewmates and respected each of their individual drives. She wandered aimlessly through the least frequented parts of the market, stopping when her keen eyes noticed something unusual: A Merchant selling what should be a rather enticing piece of merchandise...

"What's up with that?", she wondered, looking on and crossing her arms

A treasure map huh...? Why was he selling it for so cheap? More importantly, why were others not buying it?! With all of this, no matter what angle Lin chose to look at this whole scene, only one thought held firmly in her mind, "It's a scam.", she thought. Yet Linnea still couldnt shake the possibility that it wasn't... The perpetually adventurous curiosity that drove her screamed to see that for herself. Fortunately for her, she had just the way to pull that off. Using her Kenbunshoku Haki, she examined the seemingly excited merchant to find him frantic, frustrated and disappointed. This map was the real thing; he hadn't forget it! But how would he get people to believe him?

Thus when Linnea approached him and displayed interest in the map, he was all to eager to hand it over to her for a fairly low price considering what she was buying...

Now to see where it lead. On the treasure map she could clearly locate the village she was on, apparently it had been buried somewhere deep in the nearby wilderness. The problem was, it was really close to the Marines' territory, and as it usually was, the highly contested border region. This was probably part of the reason nobody dared pick up the map even for how cheap it was. Venturing into a warzone over a treasure that probably wasn't even there?! Hell no! Alas this was not a problem for Linnea, to whom an aventure on a breezy and sunny day like this one was exactly the kind of thing she enjoyed doing every day. She had activated her strongest Kenbu Haki in advance, and soon found that was indeed the best thing to do.

About a mile into the jungle and she started to realize she wasn't alone on this quest... First she spotted a single weak aura in the distance, roughly the full fifty meters away. But as she got closer and closer to the treasure, she detected even more aura signatures, some weaker than others. But the even the weaker ones were clearly determined to fight. Soon she managed to see through the vegetation clearly enough so notice one of them wearing a white uniform... So, they were Marines huh? No doubt their commander heard about their treasure and got greedy. Linnea clicked her tongue, knowing her adventure just went from fun to annoying. But then, the whole unexpected thing is what made adventures so much fun in the first place.

The Amazon immediately climbed up a tree and grabbed ten arrows... This was a wild number - even for her - but she had a plan, a plan to strike fear in the hearts of her numerous enemies. Among the foes she could see and sense, only four of them stood out for their relatively powerful presence. So her most careful shots would be aimed at those four, the other six would target some of the grunts. These Marines were obviously supposed to be on guard, but not finding anything so far made them lax. For once she faced a real challenge with her shooting. Aiming ten arrows at once was no small feat, even for her; but once she let them fly from being the cover of shrubs, she heard repeated pain filled cries from several places at once. Only one of her shots had missed, only striking one powerful Marine's arm instead of his chest as intended. He was the one furthest from her, and thus had a lot more time to react and shift slightly.

As expected, an aimless hail of gunfire immediately rained upon Linnea... With ten arrows out of nowhere, they were all right to assume they were ambushed by a crew of archers, which helped keep the gunfire spread out instead of focused, allowing Lin to take cover behind the trunk of her tree before moving on to the next, constantly hidden behind the canopy. She couldn't see that well with her own two eyes, but Haki made up for that, and the wind rustling the trees also hid what little noise she made. SHe was positively invisible...

And while the Marines focused on the invisible hidden snipers, she was walking around them all, trying to pick out the strongest among them. All of them were on edge, so if she was going to take them out, she'd have to be quick and deadly about it. Once more, she knew where to start: The strongest she could find. One well aimed shot, and the lower ranking marines would be tearing at each other's throats to take command, or worse, completely lose their organization. As she walked around the randomly firing Marines, Linnea ensured she would always be moving with enough cover between herself and her foes, and soon enough she had walked around enough to pick out the strongest aura among all of these guys. Not only the strongest aura, he also had the shiniest unifrom. Linnea knew the right moment to strike: When the leader was distracted barking orders to his squad. In a flash, Linnea had drawn a single Steel tipped arrows, loaded, and fired it, faster than a bullet, almost at the speed of sound: There was nothing that guy could do against such an attack, and with an arrow piercing cleanly through his spine, he was down for the count.

After this shot running away got a lot harder: Sure, she still had enough cover to ensure most of the marines missed her, and when that failed she still had her Haki. But splinters and shrapnel were a totally different matter... Linnea got cut and bruised repeatedly in her speedy escape, and even missed a step off the tree, only by sheer luck managing to hold on and keep running

She was bruised, cut up and tired, but she still had a lot to go... More importantly, the worst part had now passed. Judging from what she heard in her Black Den Den Mushi, they were far less organized than they were before. They still managed to cook up a plan (a rather effective one hadn't Linnea learned about it), and find a way to execute them. With still over twenty men strong, the Marines split into two, advancing on two fronts in hopes of catching the rangers in the middle. While some advanced rather openly from one prong, others prowled stealthily from the other. Ideally, this would have distracted Linnea with one end and kept her oblivious to the last ones but it just wouldn't gonna fly. She could try to allow them to think it was working, but that would place her at a serious disadvantage. Instead, she tried to accompany one of the two fronts, raining down arrows left and right and in a matter of minutes taking down at least six low Low Tiered Mariens and at least one corporal.

And their V-shaped formation just kept advancing, raining down random shots towards the middle. The more they kept going, the surer they got: No fire was coming from any other direction, so the archers had to be here. They hadn't even dropped one of them, so they couldn't be more than 5... SOme of their shots were getting desperately close to home, telling Linnea some of them were actually getting glimpses of her shadow, "I GOT ONE, OVER THERE!!"

Tch... Don't get cocky. Linnea quickly spotted the grunt who sounded the alert and a few more away from him, quickly loading and shooting four arrows, before taking aim at four enemies further to the front - three of them stronger - and firing her Quartet skill. Pain filled grunts and cries confirmed her arrows hitting home, as well as dwindling Aura flames... And once she cleared a hole throug that side of their pincer attack, Linnea went over to the opposite side, putting a good 40 meters between herself and the remaining marines...

Roughly five marines remained... Two weaklings she could take down with an obvious shot, one healthy corporal, one healthy captain, and a wounded Captain who had survived their first shot. Their fire was growing more and more focused, forcing Linnea to actually stay focused in order to antecipate and avoid their gunshots. Their comm chatter had grown silent, they had managed to retain a certain organization and strategy by grouping together, making it impossible for her to pick off strays since there weren't any. She was pretty sure at least some of them had already figured out they were fighting a single foe.

Linnea needed to bait them out... Loading two arrows into her bow, she took aim at the clustered foes and shot straight towards the two Captains. One of the grunts spotted the sneak attack and alerted his captains, but clustered as they were, even if the two of them moved out of the way, two of the grunts still got hit. And their reaction to move away was exactly what Linnea was looking for: The moment their Haki displayed any intention to move away, Linnea had readied her Blitz shooter and let off four arrows in quick succession, two sets of two: The Two captains were the first foes she targeted and were also the first ones to fall, getting caught by arrows just as they finished dodging the first two... The last Marine was shot by two arrows in tandem, and with him downed, all the Marines' resistance had been broken. Linnea got down from her tree, and a started walking back towards the treasure site. Some of these Marines had shovels on them, confirming their purpuse here. Most of them were still alive, and a few of those actually still had some fight in them. One of them went as far as trying to pull a gun and struggle to aim at her back. But the Kuja ranger had eyes everywhere, and quickly turned around with her bow primed:

"Stop that... You'll die.", Admonished Linnea, her sharp, cold eyes and drawn bow being more than enough to dissuade the Marine from making his last stand. He'd just die for nothing, even a blind man could see that.

The disabled Marine corporal understood the message, tossing his gun away...

"Naga D. Linnea!!", He called out angrily, "What is your purpose here?!"

"It's none of your business.", she answered coldly, turning her back and walking away.

With all resistance broken, Linnea was free to walk around through the battlefield, plundering bullets, intact arrows, and discarding any weapons in their posession. She thoroughly dismantled this marine platoon by killing their commander and seriously wounding all of its members, killing some others. She was unquestionably the owner of this treasure, even if a High Ranking Marine Officer was also intent on claiming it for himself. Some of his men assuredly claimed he was trying to ensure it didn't fall into Criminal hands, but the cynical huntress knew better. The Marines on this Ocean were among the worst Scum, if not the flat out worst. The lower ranking ones might remain blissfully innocent of this, but the fact of the matter doesn't change: Power corrupts, and Marine Officers have far too much of it, which is little more than an invitation to misuse it.

With the Marine problem settled, Linnea callously walked around the battlefied with a looted shovel, and promptly dug up the treasure box... "What?! Just this?", she thought loud with a quizzical, disdainful eyebrow. This tiny little box with a handful of coins... This was the reason why she wiped out all those Marines? In a way, she almost felt bad about it now, but her heavy pockets said otherwise. If not for the Marines she just defeated and looted, this little exploration would have been all for naught... She already knew this part of the wilderness like the back of her hand owing to her prior explorations after all.

Still feeling somewhat annoyed at the what appeared to be a rip-off from the shady merchant. Indeed, he was telling the truth about the treasure, he just made no mention of its size... It didn't matter now: She headed back to her ship as the sun slowly descended towards the horizon, painting the skies in rather beautiful sunset red. If she hurried to her ship, she might still catch the gorgeously colorful sight! She used the return trip to patch up some of her cuts and bruises, cleaning up the nastier looking ones before she could get proper treatment from her crew's doctor...
