Task:

Long Live the King Tenor

"So...you actually did it?" An old man, whom the people of Minion selected as their representative, asked tentatively as he stood in the doctor's office, looking at the young man who was being bandaged up by the town doctor. After his massive battle with the marine Napoleon, Gerard had carried the man back to town the bandage them both up. Sure, Gerard was on the worse end in terms of injuries, but at least he was still standing. When Napoleon had regained consciousness, he had informed his men of their arrangement, and had sent them to collect the pirates and revolutionaries Gerard had tied up there.

Once all was collected and Napoleon could walk again, the marines headed out, leaving Minion in Gerard's hands. Needless to say, the townsfolk were surprised. When Gerard had made his announcement, many people thought he was just a braggart. But now...

"I'm still here aren't I?" Gerard replied with a smirk. After all, if he had lost, he would have been dragged off in chains by the marines. Instead he was here, alive and well. "I did what I said. Fought pirates, revolutionaries and marines, and beat each and every one of them." It had been a hard fought battle, but that just made this victory all the more satisfying.

He rolled his shoulders lightly, feeling a dull ache by not much else. He glanced over at the doctor. "Hey doc, you think I'm good to walk around?" He wasn't going out fighting or anything, and besides, even in this state he still had his intangibility. The doctor looked him over, giving a small, reluctant nod. With a smirk, Gerard slowly pushed himself off of the bed he was sitting on, still feeling sore. "Well, time to meet my adoring public."

With a little help from the old man (how nice of him), Gerard made his way out of the doctor's office into the street, immediately feeling the cold in the air without his jacket on. He made a mental note to get a new one as soon as possible. But a little cold could be endured for now. Right now, he had to make an announcement.

As he expected, there was a crowd gathered outside, trying to catch a glimpse of the gas man. Word had spread very quickly about his victory and wanted to see if it was true. The proof was now standing before them. Well, guess it was time to give his grand victory speech.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" Gerard spoke out, his voice carrying over the crowd, "Not long ago I said I would challenge the three big powers for control over this island. To be honest, it was more to show you all that, if made your leader, I would be able to stand up for you all. As you can see, I've proved that. However, this doesn't automatically mean I'm your new king. I'm not one of those guys who's going to force my will upon you all. So I ask you, now that I've proven myself, will you all take me as your esteemed leader?"

The crowd was silent, a little surprised by this sense of humility. Nobody spoke for a while, before the old man next to him spoke up. "Did you mean what you said earlier? That you'll make this island great?" At that question, Gerard smirked. "The greatest in the Blues old timer!" The old man looked around, taking in the looks of the people and then gave a shrug. "Well, you went through all this trouble. What harm could it do?" There was a murmur throughout the crowd before a round of applause came up. Guess the decision was made.

Gerard was now the ruler of Minion Island.

With Gerard's role as the new ruler of Minion established, word would spread quickly around the island, rumours about his challenge put to rest. Many people were shocked, some even a little outraged, but when they had time to cool off, they started accepting it. After all, if he flopped, they could always call the marines to kick him out. If he did a good job, well, great for them!

Meanwhile, Gerard was helped back into the doctor's office. He still needed to fully recover from his fight after all. "So, what do you plan to do now?" the old man asked, curious about what their new leader was planning for them. Gerard sat back on the bed, his mind already working. "Well, first off, I need to see what finances I'm working with. If I'm to improve this place, I need to know how much we have and how to get us more. Second, we're rebuilding that ghost town. It's a perfectly good town. Let's use it! Third, I'm going to improve the housing around here. It's cold as hell and we're living in wooden shacks! Stone is much warmer, and more durable." He then tilted his head in thought, "And while we're at it, maybe build up a bit of a military force here. I mean, if these people are good enough to get recruited constantly, then why not establish a good army for the place. After all, what's the point in building us up if we can't back it up?"

The man was kind of a loss for words. This was a lot that Gerard had planned, and he had only been 'crowned' not five minutes ago. A small smile appeared on his wrinkly face. This was an enterprising young man they had here. The best kind to have in charge.
