Reaper of the Revolution

Cyrus massaged his wrists where the cuffs had bit into them, rubbing them raw. It had taken a solid hour of questioning from the rebels (who, by the way, called themselves the Drumlins. No idea why) before they finally decided he could be trusted. Cyrus had become aggravated towards the latter half of the hour, considering these people had been informed that a man matching his EXACT description was to aid them in dealing a heavy blow to the ruling government of Drum Island. However, that was neither here nor there at this point and Cyrus had done his best to remain composed during the questioning. Eventually they had released his bonds and given him Crow back, which now rested against the chair beside him. We will take you out to the castle, Raul spoke. From what Cyrus could tell he was the leader of this little gang of rebel rousers, though he didn't much look the part. The man was scrawny, much like the rest of the Drumlins. His face and hair were dirty and the collection of them in one area presented an odor that, while bearable, was far from pleasant. These people, Cyrus decided, had clearly bitten off more than they could chew in choosing the Drum Island royalty as their target for the last few years. there is a path along the cliffs that wraps all the way around, giving you a full view of the castle and its grounds. Raul continued, pointing to a map of the island on the desk between him and Cyrus.

A girl, Cyrus believed he had caught her name as Lola, suddenly appeared beside him. He had to hand it to these people, they might not look like much but they were quiet as a ghost. Lola handed Cyrus a glass of water, which he took thankfully. Just a quickly as she had appeared, Lola sank back into the shadows of the large basement the meeting was being held in. As Cyrus drank, Raul pulled out another rolled map, this one however proved to be blueprints of the castle. These people certainly did their research. Our few sources within the castle believe Dr. Avery is somewhere near the dungeons, perhaps below them. Beyond that, we have little other information. Raul concluded, standing upright once more and folding his arms in front of his chest as Cyrus looked over the blueprints himself. After a few minutes Cyrus nodded in thought, Well from the looks of it, your king is certainly aware of the weight Dr. Taylor carries. Gaining access to the doctor is going to be less than fun. Cyrus said with a thoughtful frown, Alright, no point in wasting any more time down here, as pleasant as this basement is. Let's get going. Cyrus said, rising from his seat and as if on cue, twenty members of the rebels all suddenly appeared out of the shadows. Spooky.

Reaper of the Revolution

The hike out to the cliff passage that Raul had mentioned had taken longer than Cyrus had anticipated. It had been several hours since they left the dingy basement that the Drumlins had called their base of operations. For the walk out Cyrus had to be bagged once again, unable to see the actual location or where it dumped them out. When he was finally allowed to see again they stood in the middle of a snow covered forest with little to no indication of any sign of life. The nearest town was a solid two mile hike away according to Raul. From there they had begun to scale one of the large cliffs that had given Drum Island its namesake. The climb had been tough, but surprisingly informational thanks to Cyrus's hate for silence.

So Raul, I have to ask, what's the Drumlin's overall goal here? I assume you'd like to usurp the king and his reign at some point. Cyrus asked. One of the other Drumlins who had accompanied them on the trip grunted his disapproval at Cyrus breaking the silence they clearly felt comfortable in, but Cyrus ignored him. Thankfully, Raul did as well, At the end of this crusade we hope to install our own government, more fair and just, one than the current tyrant who sits atop the throne has no part in. Raul took a deep breath, and Cyrus could tell it had nothing to do with the altitude. This next part personally pained the young rebel leader, Currently our numbers are small. Our supplies are limited and as a result we are limited to only small skirmishes and minor annoyances to the king and his people. Perhaps with the right resources, the right weapons...perhaps we could truly make the change we so desire. Cyrus nodded in thought to the leader's words as he followed closely behind on a narrow, rocky ledge. Several hundred feet dropped down beneath them, but Cyrus was hardly bothered. Instead he was more focused Raul's words.

The underlying pieces of this mission were beginning to come together. So that's why you so eagerly accepted help from the Revolutionary Army. If they...if we were to back you, you'd stand a fighting chance. Raul nodded, confirming Cyrus's thought, If we aid you in your mission to release Dr. Taylor, perhaps your people will aid us in our mission to release this island. With that, the conversation was ended, leaving Cyrus and the other some odd twenty or so Drumlins in silence. Cyrus didn't have the heart to tell Raul that the Revolutionary Army most likely wouldn't be of any use to the Drumlins. Oh sure they'd be of use in theory, but they'd never send an organized front to aid such a rag tag band of rebels. These people had little chance of standing up to a power like the king. They were ill-equipped and vastly outnumbered as far as Cyrus could tell, but they clearly had drive and that was enough to gain Cyrus's respect.

Reaper of the Revolution

By this time the group had done a full perimeter search of the castle and its grounds from high up in the mountains that surrounded it. Cyrus had to hand it to the bastard king, he had some high quality taste. The castle stood as a bastion of wealth and power on an otherwise poor island. A massive stone wall surrounded the castle itself, armed guards lining every ten feet or so. Watchtowers, four in total, broke up the defensive wall into sections. Within that was a massive building with spires and open courtyards. Heavily armed guards patrolled the interior perimeter everywhere. The king was clearly a man who enjoyed the idea of safety. To his credit he was a man that needed it, but that only made Cyrus's job that much harder. As Cyrus tried to find a weak point in the patrol of the guards, Raul spoke up from behind him, As you can see Mr. Kincaid, our king is a very careful man. His men guard the grounds day and night, no matter the weather. I've heard stories of them freezing to death rather than disobey and come inside out of the elements. They are trained and inspired by fear, preferring to face death rather than whatever punishment our king can concoct.

Cyrus sighed, Yeah I'm starting to realize just what kind of king your friend is. Is there ever a time this guy holds court? Allows regular folk within the castle walls? Raul thought for a moment and then nodded, Indeed, every second thursday of the month he allows his people into the castle. There he holds court where they bring him his qualms. Generally they're simply disregarded, some are even beat if they annoy him. Every once in awhile their wishes or requests are granted, but that's only on the rare occasion our king is in a good mood. Cyrus simply smiled and shook his head, My my that's almost too perfect my friend. You know what day it is tomorrow, don't you?
Well yes, it's the second thursday of the month, but truthfully I don't see how having the commoners in the castle will help. I'm doubtful they'll rebel against the king, especially unarmed. What are you thinking?
Cyrus's grin was from ear to ear as he thought over his plan, Trust me Raul, I have a plan, but you're most certainly not going to like it.
