Cipher Pol - Enies Lobby (Thirteen Years Ago)
Cipher Pol 1 - Book Agent Office
"Recruit Laverna!" the Cipher Pol Booking Agent shouted.
"Yes sir!" the recruited Winged woman responded.
"Usually we'd never put a rookie on a mission like this but given your track record and the information you've given us about Skypiea's disorder. We've decided to put you undercover." the Agent commented, rocking back and forth in his leather computer chair.
"Are you aware of Base #45?" the Booking Agent asked.
"Hmm... That's the Marine Base where human experimentation has been going on correct?" Laverna inquired.
"Yeah. For a long time the boys upstairs had turned an eye to their actions due to Rear Admiral's Derous pull in the political world and his first products, the Three Super Humans who've been working closely in the Cipher 7 to book New World Pirates. However, after those projects... it's reported his experiments became a bit more brutal. Furthermore... more and more orphans are going missing without a trace of records on their whereabouts and the experiments done." the Agent commented.
"So the guys upstairs don't want to step on Derous toes but at the same time, they don't want too loose any future monsters for their dirty work?" Laverna said chuckling.
"Oi. I wouldn't talk like that around the other agents Laverna. Though, you're correct." the Agent said sighing.
"As one of the younger recruits, we want to send you in cold. You're to have no contact with us until three months in and even then, you'll only have one or two handlers who've been spying their for about three years now. They'll be in charge of relaying your reports back to us. He's been experimented with Winged by cutting off their wings-" Booking Agent stated but his words were frozen by the cold stare in Laverna's eyes.
"AHmph..." the Agent said clearing his throat.
"I know... Arguably... It's a sensitive situation. Since we found out his experiments are now targeting different races... The World Government doesn't want that information leaking and getting out to the public." the Agent concluded.
"I've heard enough. What's my angle? I swear though Charlie... If they kill a single Winged in my presence... I'm going to build up a case against this Derous person. With my Devil Fruit abilities... Losing a Wing or two won't be a problem... I can just regenerate them." Laverna rebutted.
"True but you can't let that information become privy to them. You're name will be Isabella. That's it. You'll be an orphan whose dream of escaping is to become a Pirate who'll get revenge on the Base and aim towards being a Pirate Queen." Charlie explained. Breaking out into laughter,
"Rishi Rishi Rishi... Who in the world wrote that mission profile?" Laverna inquired, with tears filling her eyes. Pausing for a second to catch her breath,
"I guess it's romantic in a sense." Isabella said grinning.
One Year Later - Base #45
"Now let's begin the experiment." Derous said, staring towards Junbei who had been escorted into the room and strapped onto the doctor's examination table. Sticking the syringe into a vial, Derous would retract it's plunger, to suction the liquid into it's barrel.
"Enough romanticising. This chemical is called 'Echo Cell Punch'. Sounds like a party drink I know but I promise it's nothing such. It's serum that alters the way your brain processes pain. In small doses, it can temporarily null the way your body accepts and processes pain in a sense. The side of effects of course being that you're body can be mortally wounded and prolong motion can lead to fatalities or permanent cell damage. However, with a few electrotherapy experiments I hope to curve the way your brain processes pain overall." Derous explained, walking towards Junbei filled syringe in hand. Jerking around in the chair in fear, Junbei tried to free himself but using a blast of his Haoshoku Haki, Junbei was frozen still from movement. Injecting the syringe into his arm, specifically targeting a blood vessel, the Echo Cell took it's effect. In that moment, Junbei's eyes became dilated, his iris colour changing from it's predisposed Emerald Green, to a dark Crimson Red.
"Now the stimulant. This drug is called Wild Fire. It'll burn all of your nerve synapse edges. Oh, and it'll hurt... alot. Actually, even imagine millions upon millions of needle pricking violently into each pore on the surface of your epidermis." Derous said smiling happily. As the second barrel emptied into Junbei's arm, almost immediately the last ounce was administered, the mute's voice struggle to come out but his voicebox couldn't correspond with the pain. Leaving Junbei to mumble in pain, his moans similar to that of a dying oxen. Foaming from his mouth, tears like rainfall from the heavens spewed from his eyes and temperatures around 107 F caused him to sweat buckets to nearly half barrel filled of liquid due to perspiration. When Junbei tried to pass out, Derous would take a small brace device, attach it to the child's hand and administer around 1000V's of electricity to keep the orphan awake. This process would continue for several hours, the Echo Cell numbing the pain and the Wild Fire continuing to burn out his nerve endings. All while, Derous took notice on the level of pain, the reactions of the patients to said pain on a threshold scale and the amount of times the patient would attempt to pass out among others things for the experiments period. At the end, when the drugs initial effects had worn off, Derous would unstrap the patient, who'd either try to run from the room, only to pass out or they'd simply be frozen from the mental trauma. However, on this day, Junbei, who'd been wincing in pain at first, did something that no other patient had ever done, the child, ten years of age, would simply look at Derous, and oddly, smile.
Once over, Junbei would pass out and wake up hours later in his room.
"Hey!" Cody's voice could've been heard ringing in Junbei's eardrums. Opening his eyes, the child would come to, around the bunk was Cody, Marsha and Jules, the other two of his roommates. Exhaling a sigh of relief,
"Don't scare us like that... We thought you'd died... The last four orphans didn't react so well..." Cody said. Junbei tried to move and turn his head towards Cody but that action was futile.
"Don't try to move! The drugs mess with your motor capabilities... You're brain won't be able to process motion for a while. It happened to all of us. The fact you can even open your eyes is a miracle... It's usually signs that you won't loose your ability to walk." Cody said smiling.
"I guess he's not that much of a pussy after all." Marsh chimed in.
"OI!" Cody shouted nudging the girl.
"He's still a bed wetter." Jules said teasingly, sticking out his tongue and winking at the Red Head. Unable to talk still, Junbei would only watch the trio interact, grinning to himself. They'd seemed friendly, friendship was something he wasn't accustomed too. After being outcast by his Father and Siblings, his only friend was his late mother... and even those memories we're too painful to revisit, the day she died was the last day Junbei spoke. Without even noticing it, the Red Head Orphan had began to cry, a silent kind that was only noticed until Marsh pointed it out.
"HEY! DOES SOMEWHERE HURT!?" Cody exclaimed, turning towards Junbei worried.
"Idiot. He can't feel pain... How could somewhere hurt?" Marsh chimed in.
"Whoa... Cody's so insensitive. Sorry kid." Jules responded. They'd continue to hover around Junbei for several hours, sharing stories and background about their lives in various parts of the world, keeping the Red Head thrilled with their details about family, love, food and households. Not all orphans didn't have parents or places to live, he'd think to himself. After a while, the conversation about piracy came up. Wiggins, idolised Wallace, while the others looked up to Pirate Rookies like Mona Barbados and Vega Stigan, who were young stags making waves in the World at the time, shortly after, one after the next, Marsh and Jules would fall asleep. It was then, the conversation that would change Junbei's life forever would commence.
"Hey. Junbei. I have something serious to ask you. If you make it out of here... Would you like to join my Captain's Crew? You could do whatever you want... Cook... Fish... Wet your bed... Hehe... Kidding." Cody said, pausing when he saw how embarrassed Junbei was at the constant reminder of him wetting his pants.
"However... I want to make this woman Pirate Queen." Cody said smiling, placing his folded fist over his chest. Finally regaining some feeling, Junbei would sit up, turning towards Cody and grasping his fist. Nodding slightly, he'd shoot the boy a yes, as if to say,
'Of course.'.
"Hehe... Really!? AWESOME!" Cody exclaimed. "It'll be tough. We'll be wanted by the whole world... and some days might be tougher than others. However, I'll protect you with these fists of mine." Cody shot Junbei the broadest grin of all. Returning the grin with a gentle nod, Cody's words shone as bright as the moonlight that trickled into the room. As the whole room illuminated from the Luna's Rays, the child's question was met with a bold grin from Junbei.
"Welcome to the Songbird Pirates, Jun." Cody said grinning.
"You'll meet our Captain tomorrow... She's a little rough around the edges but she's the boss of this place, well, at least among the orphans. Her name is Isabella. She plays a mean piano." Cody said grinning. Getting up from Junbei's bedside, as the other two roommates slept, Cody would stair out the bars on the window, towards the Bright Moon in the sky.
"Do you know Junbei... Why we're called the Songbird Pirates?" Cody asked, looking over his shoulder towards the seated child.
Present Time - Impel Down
At this moment, Junbei regained consciousness in his cell. His eyes regain a bit of colour, he'd hear a voice from an adjacent cell calling to him, among the noise and clatter from the other prisoners, bellowing his name. However, this woman's voice pierced through them all, as it was firm but warm, and among all the rowdy shouts, it stood out above everything else.
"Auburn Songbird... If you can hear me... Speak." the woman's voice called. Rattling around restlessly, his body and feet chained onto the wall in seastone shackles, he'd shout,
"Is someone calling for me!?" Junbei inquired, pressing his ear against the wall.
"Finally... You responded." the woman rebutted. It was at that moment, that a wave of Haoshoku Haki ran through the cells with thirty-meters of range, silencing Tidus and a few other inmates who'd been shouting Death Threats at Junbei. Junbei's eyes would open widely in shock, barely fighting to keep consciousness himself. "Good. Their voices were starting to really piss me off." the strange woman said sighing.
"I really hate when people talk over me yah know." she'd said in a more crude but personal tone.
"I've been calling out towards you for days now... but you seemed pretty out of it." she continued.
"I've heard whispers of you around the guards and scrap of information I'd ease drop on from the Coo. Any man with a name like Songbird Pirates is a man I'd want to meet. I quite like Songbirds, well, the animal that is." the woman said.
"Rishi Rishi... The only reason you're talking to me now... is because my Crew's name was Songbird Pirates?" Junbei said, spitefully.
"Yup. Don't have to be so sensitive about it. Jeez. Whatta ya mean by 'was'?" the woman inquired.
"Ha. I guess you didn't hear enough." Junbei responded, slouching slightly.
"My First Mate... and Crew Mate... are dead." Junbei stated. The mysterious woman broke out in laughter.
"That's what yer' sad about!?" the woman exclaimed. Annoyed,
"OI. What are you laughing at!?" Junbei shouted. Ceasing her laughter,
"I'm laughing at yer' Will. First Mate? Crew Mate? Anyone who lives a life as a Pirate has to be prepared for those consequences. I heard rumours you'd been running around saying you want to be the Next Pirate King and that'd you flatten Oceanus... but if your Will is so weak to be crushed by a few deaths... then you don't deserve the title." the woman said bluntly.
"WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU GET OFF TELLING ME THAT!?" Junbei shouted until tears filled his eyes. Unable to wipe his own tears, the man's forehead slammed against the wall.
"EVERYONE AROUND ME SINCE I WAS A CHILD JUST ENDS UP DEAD. WHAT AM I SUPPOSE TO DO? JUST SHRUG EVERYTHING OVER MY SHOULDER AND KEEP MOVING ON!? HUH!? WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK I AM LADY!?" Junbei shouted.
"I'M DONE. JUNBEI VON ECHO IS DEAD. I CAN'T... I CAN'T LOOSE ANYONE ELSE. NOT CHARLOTTE. NOT CAPRICE. NOT JUJU. I CAN'T." Junbei shouted.
"Baha." the woman exclaimed.
"You're much more selfish than I envisioned. People die kid. Whether you were around or not... It's the rules of the Jungle. The Strong will live and the weak will die. Plain and Simple." the woman explained.
"Now! Before yer' go screaming again and get yer panties in a ruffle... Listen to me first okay." the woman stated.
"I have a Captain whose just like you... When we lost the first time... She blamed herself for this all. All she would repeat is 'Sorry.'" the woman said.
"Until one day... A lot of our men and women died. She took it pretty rough. I've been losing people close to me since I was five, death was so normal to me, so I never took it on." the woman stated.
"However, did you know what her response was after her remorse?" the woman inquired.
"I'll get stronger." the woman said.
"No matter how many times we lost... No matter how many times we won, she'd say the same thing." the woman concluded. Junbei's mind went back to Cody's words on that night,
"No matter how many times a Songbird's in caged... No matter how many times he sings his song for his owner... One day... That cage will open. And without a shadow of a doubt... That bird will fly away." Cody's words chimed through.
"Getting stronger means... Fighting for your own freedom. What's your freedom, Jun? And how hard are you willing to fight for it?" Cody inquired.
Exit.
